I consider the materiality of painting as both an aesthetic and intellectual form. Sourced from photograph and painted in realistic way, my paintings investigate the aesthetic, psychological and poetic qualities of images.
On one hand, deconstruction plays an important part in my paintings. I am interested in the subtext of an image and how simple imageries indicate complex contents. On the other hand, I see sensual energy as an essential component of my paintings. By using mellow colors and fuzzy brushworks, I want them to evoke psychological sensations. Therefore, while the paintings can be articulated with formal and conceptual concerns, they stay incomprehensible.
The idea of uncanny is addressed in my work. Through both explicit and inexplicit ways, the paintings evocatively illustrate spaces and objects that seemed ordinary yet strange and surreal.
